1779 -1783, Commander in Chief, Aide de Camp, Line Officers Etc by Henry Alexander Ogden depicts the 1779 regulations which marked a formalization of the Continental Army’s appearance. Commander in Chief (George Washington) – shown in blue coat with buff facings and gold epaulettes. Aides-de-Camp – Distinguished by their trimmed coats, sometimes with lace or feathered cockades. Line Officers (Infantry/Artillery) – Representing rank-and-file leadership with various insignia and standardized uniforms according to the 1779 Continental Army regulations. Differentiation by Colors – Blue was the standard coat color, but facings (collars, cuffs, lapels) varied by region or role.
