Cardsharps by Caravaggio is one of the artist’s earliest known works and a powerful example of his gift for realism and dramatic storytelling. The painting depicts a young, unsuspecting boy engaged in a card game with a sharper, while another accomplice stands behind him, signaling and peeking at his cards. Caravaggio uses sharp contrasts of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) to heighten the sense of intrigue, drawing the viewer’s attention to the sly gestures, hidden cards, and tense expressions. Beyond its surface scene of deception, the work reflects themes of innocence, vice, and human folly—subjects Caravaggio returned to throughout his career.
