Product Details:

Fort Vimieux by J.M.W. Turner depicts an English ship that ran aground near the French coastal fort of Wimereux (historically referred to as Vimieux) during a reconnaissance mission in 1805. The ship sustained fire from the fort's batteries and waited for the rising tide to escape. Turner's composition captures the dramatic interplay of light and atmosphere, characteristic of his Romantic style. The painting remained in Turner's possession until around 1845, after which it was acquired by Charles Meigh of Staffordshire. In 1850, it was sold to Colonel James Lenox, a prominent American collector.
