The Union handbill “Freedom to the Slave” is a vivid Civil War–era recruitment broadside that combines patriotic and emancipatory imagery to encourage African American enlistment. At its center, a Union officer raises a sword and a flag inscribed with the words “Freedom to the Slave,” symbolizing both military strength and liberation. To his right, formerly enslaved people break their chains and are welcomed by Union troops, while to his left a freedman reads outside a building marked “Public School,” highlighting the promise of education and citizenship. Behind him, Union soldiers march under the Stars and Stripes, tying the fight for the Union directly to the cause of emancipation. This striking chromolithograph embodies the dual wartime mission of preserving the nation and securing freedom for the enslaved.
