Product Details:
The Gathering of the Overmountain Men at Sycamore Shoals by Lloyd Branson depicts a crucial moment in the Southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War in September 1780. The Overmountain Men were rugged patriot militia from the Appalachian frontier—farmers, hunters, and settlers—used to harsh living and skilled in guerrilla-style fighting. Most came from what was then known as the Washington District (modern-day East Tennessee) and parts of present-day Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The goal was to march over the mountains and confront Ferguson before he could strike. On September 25, 1780, around 900 men gathered at Sycamore Shoals and began their difficult journey over the Blue Ridge Mountains, through treacherous terrain and worsening weather. The Overmountain Men caught up with Ferguson near Kings Mountain, South Carolina. On October 7, 1780, they fought the Battle of Kings Mountain, a stunning Patriot victory. Ferguson was killed, and nearly his entire Loyalist force was captured or killed.
