Product Details:

The Athenaeum Portrait by Gilbert Stuart is the most iconic and widely reproduced image of George Washington, serving as the basis for the portrait on the U.S. one-dollar bill. Stuart began the painting in Philadelphia, intending it as a model from which he could make numerous replicas, but he never completed the original canvas—Washington’s coat and background remain unfinished. Despite this, the portrait captures Washington with a calm dignity, his expression conveying both the reserve and strength associated with his leadership. The work emphasizes Washington’s stoic presence rather than ornate detail, reinforcing his status as a national symbol during the early years of the Republic.
