Product Details:
Herkimer at the Battle of Oriskany by Frederick Coffay Yohn vividly depicts General Nicholas Herkimer during the brutal Revolutionary War clash of August 6, 1777. The painting shows the wounded Herkimer propped against a tree, calmly directing his men even after being struck in the leg, embodying courage and resolve amid the chaos of one of the war’s bloodiest battles. Yohn dramatizes the ferocity of the ambush, with smoke, struggle, and hand-to-hand combat surrounding the steadfast commander, turning Herkimer into a symbol of patriotic sacrifice and leadership during a pivotal moment in the Saratoga campaign. After the battle he was carried home, where an amputation was attempted days later. Unfortunately, due to poor medical conditions and likely infection, he died on August 16, 1777, ten days after the battle.
