John Quincy Adams (1767–1848) was a key figure in the early Republic, contributing significantly as a diplomat, senator, congressman, and president. His legacy is marked by his efforts in foreign policy, his fight against slavery, and his influence in shaping U.S. political philosophy.  As a diplomat, Adams played a major role in negotiating the Treaty of Ghent (1814) that ended the War of 1812. He was also instrumental in the negotiation of the Adams-Onís Treaty (1819) with Spain, which ceded Florida to the U.S.
