Product Details:

“Kearsarge Sinking the Alabama, June 19th 1864” by Henry Alexander Ogden depicts one of the most famous naval engagements of the American Civil War—the Battle of Cherbourg—in which the Union warship USS Kearsarge engaged and sank the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama off the coast of Cherbourg, France, on June 19, 1864. Ogden shows the moment when the Kearsarge’s superior firepower and defensive preparation prevailed, sending the Alabama to the depths after an intense duel at sea that lasted less than an hour; this clash was widely reported in the press and became symbolic of the Union’s naval supremacy and the global reach of Civil War hostilities.
