Product Details:

Molly Pitcher Being Presented to George Washington by Dennis Malone Carter is a romanticized 19th-century painting that dramatizes the legendary moment following the Battle of Monmouth (1778), where Mary Ludwig Hays—popularly known as Molly Pitcher—is shown being recognized by General George Washington. The scene, set amid a smoke-filled battlefield, places Washington heroically on horseback, flanked by aides, while Molly stands humbly among soldiers and artillery, having taken her wounded husband's place at a cannon. Though partly mythologized, Carter’s work celebrates women’s contributions to the Revolutionary War and reflects a Victorian-era reverence for patriotism, valor, and gendered heroism.
