Product Details:

Portrait of George Washington by Rembrandt Peale is one of the most enduring and idealized representations of America's first president. Peale painted this likeness around 1823 as part of his effort to create what he called an “iconic” image of Washington—one that blended lifelike detail with classical nobility. Drawing from earlier sittings with Washington in 1795, as well as influences from ancient Roman busts and neoclassical aesthetics, Peale emphasized Washington's calm strength, moral character, and leadership. His most famous version, known as the “Porthole Portrait” for its trompe l’oeil stone oval frame, helped elevate Washington to a symbol of republican virtue, and it became widely copied in engravings and classrooms across the nation.
