Product Details:

Sergeant, 4th Company, 1st Pennsylvania Battalion, 1775 by Charles M. Lefferts illustrates a Continental Army non-commissioned officer at the outset of the American Revolution. The sergeant is depicted in a brown regimental coat with red facings, a common uniform choice for Pennsylvania troops early in the war, before standardization. He wears buff or tan breeches, white gaiters, and a black tricorn hat adorned with a cockade, signaling his rank and patriot allegiance. A red cloth sergeant’s sash is draped across his body, and he carries a halberd, the traditional symbol of a sergeant’s authority on the battlefield and during drill. Lefferts' rendering highlights the transitional nature of early American uniforms—still influenced by colonial militia traditions—while emphasizing the professionalism and leadership of emerging Continental forces.
