Product Details:
Julian Rys’s portrait of Tadeusz Kosciuszko presents the Polish-born engineer and military leader with a sense of restrained dignity, emphasizing intellect and resolve over battlefield drama, a fitting tribute to a man whose greatest weapons were strategy and principle. Kosciuszko played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War as a military engineer, designing and strengthening key fortifications, most famously at West Point, whose defensive layout he helped make nearly impenetrable and which later became the U.S. Military Academy. His field works in the Saratoga campaign contributed to the American victory that persuaded France to formally back the revolution, a turning point in the war. Beyond tactics, Kosciuszko embodied the Revolution’s ideals—he opposed slavery, left money in his will to help free and educate enslaved people, and believed deeply in equality—making him not just a foreign ally, but a lasting symbol of the struggle for liberty on both sides of the Atlantic.
