Product Details:
The Battle of Gettysburg by Rufus Fairchild Zogbaum depictis the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment's heroic charge on July 2, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg. This pivotal Civil War battle, fought July 1–3, 1863, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was a Union victory that marked a turning point in the war, halting General Robert E. Lee’s invasion of the North. Zogbaum’s painting captures the First Minnesota’s sacrificial action on Cemetery Ridge, where approximately 262 soldiers charged a Confederate brigade nearly six times their size to buy time for Union reinforcements. About three-quarters of the regiment were killed or wounded, making it the highest single-battle toll for any Union regiment.
