Product Details:
Rick Reeves’s The Sunshine Division in Korea depicts the 40th Infantry Division, nicknamed the “Sunshine Division,” in Kumwha Valley during the Korean War in spring 1952, illustrating the experience of California Army National Guard troops in the conflict. After North Korea’s invasion of South Korea on June 25, 1950, President Harry Truman authorized the mobilization of hundreds of reserve units, including the 40th Infantry, into federal service; they mustered in September 1950, trained in Japan, and finally arrived in Korea in January 1952 to relieve the 24th Infantry Division and assume defensive positions. By that stage of the war the fighting had settled into trench and bunker warfare with intense small-unit actions in sectors like Kumwha and Kumsong, where the Sunshine Division engaged in violent patrols and battles through 1952 and into 1953, later participating in actions at Heartbreak Ridge and defending the northern edge of the “Punchbowl” until the armistice in July 1953.
