Product Details:

The Surveillante in Action Against the Quebec, 6 October 1779 by Auguste-Louis Rossel de Cercy captures a fierce naval engagement between the French frigate Surveillante and the British frigate Quebec during the American Revolutionary War. Though fought between French and British ships off the coast of France, it was part of the wider conflict sparked by French support for the American cause. Cercy portrays the ships at the height of battle, their sails shredded and hulls splintered by cannon fire as smoke billows across the sea. The combat was so intense that both vessels were nearly destroyed; Quebec ultimately exploded, while Surveillante, badly damaged, rescued many of the British survivors. Rather than glorifying triumph, the painting emphasizes the brutal cost of war and the unexpected chivalry that could follow even the bloodiest of encounters.
