Product Details:

The Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder is a monumental, detailed depiction of the biblical story from Genesis 11, in which humanity, speaking a single language, attempts to build a tower to reach heaven—only for God to confound their speech and scatter them across the earth. Bruegel sets the story not in ancient Mesopotamia, but in a bustling European port city of his own time, giving the tower the look of a half-built Roman amphitheater, layered with arches and scaffolding. Workers swarm over its immense structure, tiny compared to its spiraling bulk, while King Nimrod, in the foreground, inspects the progress. Bruegel’s architectural detail is astonishing, but the scene also carries a moral: the tower is already crumbling in places, a reminder of the hubris and fragility of human ambition. The vast scale, busy activity, and subtle decay all underscore his fascination with mankind’s relentless but ultimately doomed striving.
