Product Details:

A Cotton Office in New Orleans by Edgar Degas captures a moment inside the cotton brokerage run by his family’s relatives during his visit to Louisiana. The composition shows a bustling yet informal interior: men in suits examine, weigh, and discuss bales of raw cotton, while others read newspapers, write at desks, or converse. In the foreground, Degas’s uncle Michel Musson inspects a tuft of cotton, its white fibers contrasting with the dark tones of the room. The natural light filtering in from the windows gives the scene a calm, observational quality, while the scattered poses of the figures suggest the rhythm of everyday business. This painting is notable as Degas’s only work set in the United States, blending his French Impressionist brushwork with a documentary precision that records both the cotton trade’s economic importance and the genteel yet industrious world of New Orleans commerce in the Reconstruction era.
