Product Details:

Barrington's Action at St Lucia, 15 December 1778 is a 1780 oil canvas by Dominic Serres the Elder that captures a pivotal West Indies naval clash during the American Revolutionary War. Following France’s formal alliance with the American rebels in 1778, British Rear-Admiral Samuel Barrington swiftly captured the strategic, French-held island of Saint Lucia to monitor enemy movements from its natural harbors. When a vastly superior French fleet under Admiral d'Estaing arrived to recapture the island, Barrington executed a celebrated defensive maneuver by anchoring his seven warships in a tight, impenetrable line across the mouth of the Grand Cul de Sac bay, safely sheltering his vulnerable troop transports behind them. Serres’ dramatic composition highlights the tactical brilliance of this blockade, contrasting the orderly, defensive formation of the British fleet on the right with the advancing line of twelve French warships on the left, capturing the explosive bursts of white cannon smoke that marked the successful repelling of the French assaults.
