Capitol Cornerstone Ceremony, 1793 by Allyn Cox depicts George Washington participating in the historic laying of the cornerstone of the United States Capitol on September 18, 1793. Wearing his Masonic regalia, Washington is shown overseeing the ceremonial placement of the cornerstone as members of the Masonic fraternity and other participants gather around the construction site. The ceremony marked an important milestone in the creation of the nation’s permanent seat of government and was followed by a grand celebration. Cox’s mural is part of the historic series of murals he created for the U.S. Capitol, portraying significant events in the early history of the building and the nation. The original mural is part of the historic artwork commissioned for the U.S. Capitol under the direction of the Architect of the Capitol.
