Product Details:

Captain Kidd in New York Harbor by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris portrays Captain William Kidd, a Scottish sailor who transitioned from privateering to piracy, arriving in New York Harbor. The scene captures the tension and drama surrounding Kidd's return, as he faced accusations of piracy and awaited trial. Kidd was originally a respected sea captain and privateer. He settled in New York City in the late 1690s, marrying Sarah Oort, a wealthy widow. By the time he lived in New York, Kidd was a prominent member of society, owning property and mingling with influential figures, including Governor Benjamin Fletcher and other elites. He even contributed to the building of Trinity Church and was considered a respectable citizen. After turning to piracy, and murdering a crew member, Kidd was arrested in Boston then sent to England. He was tried and hanged for piracy and murder in 1701. His execution was gruesome: he was hanged twice (the rope broke the first time), and his body was gibbeted (hung in chains) over the River Thames as a warning to others.
