Product Details:

Ulysses S. Grant’s quote - “No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted.” - perfectly reflects both his leadership style and the broader strategic aims of the Union during the American Civil War. This quote was delivered during the Battle of Fort Donelson in Tennessee, in February 1862. Grant had surrounded the Confederate fort, and when Confederate General Simon B. Buckner requested terms for surrender, Grant famously replied with this line. The Confederates were forced to surrender about 12,000–15,000 troops, making it the first major Union victory of the war. The phrase became so iconic that it gave Grant a new nickname - "Unconditional Surrender Grant" - which helped shape his reputation as a no-nonsense, relentless commander who demanded total victory rather than compromise. This quote came to symbolize the Union's hardening stance: the war would not end through negotiation, but only through total Confederate surrender. It underlined the shift in strategy toward "hard war" - aiming to break the South’s will to fight.
