Product Details:

This dramatic historical scene, George Washington Accepts the Surrender of British General Cornwallis, was produced by Jean Zuber et Cie. of Rixheim around 1850. Unlike a traditional oil painting, it was created by the renowned French decorative arts firm as part of its historical artwork and wallpaper production. The image commemorates the British surrender following the Siege of Yorktown on October 19, 1781, the decisive victory that effectively secured American independence. The work depicts George Washington receiving the surrender of the British army, although historically Charles Cornwallis did not attend the ceremony himself, sending Charles O'Hara to surrender on his behalf.
