Product Details:

Marquis de Lafayette Swears Allegiance to the United States is Lafayette's oath of allegiance, signed on June 9, 1778. The brief but significant statement reads:

“I, the Marquis de Lafayette, Major General in the service of the United States of North America, acknowledging the necessity of the bond of allegiance to the United States of North America, and being determined to give them every proof in my power of my attachment and zeal for the freedom and independence of the said States, without any pecuniary consideration, do hereby renounce and abjure all allegiance, fidelity and obedience to George the Third, King of Great Britain; and I pledge my honor to support, maintain and defend the said United States against the said King George the Third, his heirs and successors, and his or their abettors, assistants and adherents, and will serve the said United States in the office of Major General, which I now hold, with all the zeal, fidelity and courage of which I am capable.”

The document was required because Congress wanted foreign officers serving in the Continental Army to formally renounce allegiance to Great Britain and affirm their commitment to the American cause. For Lafayette, who had already volunteered his services without pay and become one of George Washington's most trusted generals, the oath symbolized his complete dedication to American independence. The original signed document is preserved by the U.S. National Archives.
