Retreat to Victory by Henry Hintermeister captures the intensity of the retreat out of New York after the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776. Washington, under the cover of night and fog, masterfully orchestrated an escape across the East River, saving his army. He is pictured as he personally supervises the move. Standing in the swirling fog, that settled during dawn, Washinton stands, waiting for the last man to step aboard.
