Product Details:
The Calling of Saint Matthew by Caravaggio was created around 1599–1600 for the Contarelli Chapel in Rome. The scene depicts the moment described in the Gospel of Matthew when Christ enters a dimly lit room and calls Matthew, a tax collector, to become one of his disciples. A dramatic beam of light cuts across the composition, illuminating Matthew and symbolizing divine grace. Christ, accompanied by Saint Peter, gestures toward Matthew, whose surprised expression and pointing hand suggest a moment of self-recognition and spiritual awakening. Caravaggio's masterful use of chiaroscuro—strong contrasts between light and shadow—heightens the emotional intensity and realism of the scene, making the biblical event feel immediate and human. The painting is regarded as one of the defining masterpieces of the Baroque era and a landmark in Western religious art.
