The Crucifixion of Saint Peter (1600–1601) is one of the most celebrated religious paintings by Caravaggio. Created for the Cerasi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo, the work depicts the martyrdom of Saint Peter, who, according to Christian tradition, requested to be crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. Caravaggio captures the moment as three laborers struggle to raise the heavy cross, emphasizing the physical effort involved in the execution. The composition is stark and dramatic. Peter's aged body is illuminated against a dark background, drawing attention to his determined face and powerful gesture as he looks outward toward the viewer.
