Product Details:
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." is a famous quote by Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He wrote this in a 1787 letter to William Stephens Smith, the son-in-law of John Adams. The full context was Jefferson's response to the Shays’ Rebellion, a populist uprising in Massachusetts. Jefferson, writing from Paris, expressed the view that periodic resistance to authority—even violent—could be a necessary check on government overreach. The "tree of liberty" metaphor implied that liberty must sometimes be defended through sacrifice.
