Framed U.S. Life Saving Station, Cleveland, Ohio

The U.S. Life Saving Station, Cleveland, Ohio was one of the most important Great Lakes rescue stations of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Established in 1876 at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River on Lake Erie, the station was part of the newly organized U.S. Life-Saving Service, whose crews stood watch over Cleveland Harbor and launched rescue boats during storms, shipwrecks, and other maritime emergencies. The original station, often depicted in early postcards, was a modest wooden structure located on the west pier where the river enters the lake. Its surfmen became well known for their bravery in aiding sailors and passengers endangered by the hazardous weather and heavy shipping traffic of the Great Lakes. In 1915 the Life-Saving Service was merged into the U.S. Coast Guard, and the station continued its lifesaving mission until it was replaced by a larger, modern Coast Guard facility in 1940. The Cleveland station remains an enduring symbol of the courage and dedication of the men who safeguarded one of America's busiest freshwater ports.
