Product Details:
Washington as a Freemason by Strobridge & Co. is one of the best-known 19th-century Masonic portraits of George Washington. The print depicts Washington standing beneath a Gothic arch wearing his Masonic apron and collar while holding a trowel and gavel, traditional symbols of Freemasonry. Inscriptions identify his Masonic milestones: initiated on November 4, 1752, passed on March 3, 1753, and raised to the degree of Master Mason on August 4, 1753 at Fredericksburg Lodge No. 4 in Virginia. The parchment in his hand bears the inscription, "The grand object of masonry is to promote the happiness of the Human Race." Surrounding the central portrait are busts of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette and Andrew Jackson, along with biblical scenes, allegorical figures, and numerous Masonic emblems emphasizing virtue, brotherhood, and moral instruction.
