Product Details:
"Death of the Virgin" (1604–1606) is one of the most powerful and controversial paintings by Caravaggio. Commissioned for the church of Santa Maria della Scala in Rome, the painting depicts the death of the Virgin Mary surrounded by grieving apostles and Mary Magdalene. Rather than presenting Mary as an idealized, heavenly figure, Caravaggio portrayed her as a plainly dressed woman lying lifeless on a simple bier, her body showing the weight and reality of death. The mourners are rendered with raw human emotion, their sorrow expressed through bowed heads, tears, and gestures of despair. By emphasizing the humanity of Mary and the genuine anguish of her followers, Caravaggio created a deeply moving meditation on death, loss, and faith. Today, the painting is housed in the Louvre Museum and is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Baroque art.
