The Life Saving Station at Jones Beach, Long Island, New York, was part of the network of U.S. Life-Saving Service stations established along the Atlantic coast to protect mariners navigating the hazardous waters off Long Island. Located on a barrier beach exposed to powerful surf, shifting sandbars, dense fog, and frequent storms, the station's surfmen maintained round-the-clock patrols of the shoreline, watching for shipwrecks and vessels in distress.
