Product Details:

The Life Saving Station at Jones Beach, Long Island, New York, was part of the network of U.S. Life-Saving Service stations established along the Atlantic coast to protect mariners navigating the hazardous waters off Long Island. Located on a barrier beach exposed to powerful surf, shifting sandbars, dense fog, and frequent storms, the station's surfmen maintained round-the-clock patrols of the shoreline, watching for shipwrecks and vessels in distress. When emergencies occurred, crews launched surfboats through heavy breakers or employed the breeches buoy rescue system to bring stranded sailors safely ashore. The station served a particularly important role during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Long Island's south shore was a major shipping route and numerous vessels fell victim to the region's treacherous coastal conditions. Following the 1915 merger of the U.S. Life-Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service into the United States Coast Guard, the station continued its lifesaving mission under Coast Guard administration, remaining a lasting symbol of the bravery and dedication of America's coastal rescue crews.
